Hovhannes Toumanian’s study
The poet's study is full of art works and bookcases. This room is organized according to Toumanian's aesthetic taste. Books, his family members’ and relatives’ photos, figurines, drawings, beautiful stationeries – Toumanian was a regular visitor and customer of antique dealers and Commission shops. When he was at home he spent most of the day in this room with his guests at “the table of conversation”.
The green broadcloth covered desk is in the center, on which things are arranged exactly as the poet left them the last time he left for treatment in Moscow. The beautiful bookcase for Eastern history books is in one of the corners. Toumanian called it “Muromets” because he bought it with the fee he received for the translation of “Ilya Muromets”.
At the last period of his life, when his health condition became worse he rarely sat on the rocking chair in front of the desk. Mostly he used to lie on the couch near the wall, write down his great quatrains on small pieces of paper and put them in a special box for quatrains. It was the period when Toumanian preferred the oriental style not only in literature, but also in furnishing.
“Do not smoke and do not ask for books” – the writing is on the wall of his study. A large portrait of his son Artavazd, who died in Van in 1918, also hangs on the wall of the study. Artavazd’s death was Toumanian’s greatest personal tragedy, after – the poet never recovered.
