The prison does not break Toumanians will. The poet realized his own innocence which helped him to keep calm and face the trials with dignity. He didn’t lose the brave spirit and continued to write.
On his 40th birthday the poet was in prison, which was marked by the poem “Descent”. As an answer to that Toumanian’s eldest son Mushegh – who was also in prison – wrote his “Ascent” work. In line with those days the poet wrote his prominent “A drop of Honey”. While in prison Toumanian made also translations (Pushkin’s “Winter Evening”, Korsak’s “He spoke all the night” and a number of other writings…)
After almost six month imprisonment Toumanian was released on bail and soon took over the editorship of the "Horizon" daily newspaper. In that period, thanks to Toumanian, the Armenian public speaking and journalistic thought was distinguished by brilliant pages. Highly important articles were published, one after another, which discussed various and urgent topics (“Non-literary nobodies as critics”, “Grieving people”, “The Politics and Us”, “The Shape and the Spirit”, “The Wage of an Armenian Teacher”, “They don’t speak Armenian”, etc.).
In 1911 news had already spread about that the "Dashnaktsutyun case" (political party) was to be heard in Saint-Petersburg at the end of the year. In November Toumanian was arrested again and sent to Russia by train. The first letter, sent from the pre-trial detention center in Petersburg, is dated December 20. He wrote in his letter to his daughter Nvard “… I am healthy. My cell is a clean little room with all the amenities… try to live well these two months until the case is over. And of course, it will go well. The truth will never be lost.” He believed that his innocence would be proven, and spent his days in prison with a peaceful and calm spirit: He read fiction books and studied his “case”. In that period he made word for word translation of Thomas Moore’s “Saint Petersburg” poem.
The "Dashnaktsutyun Case" trial began in January and ended in March of 1912. The writer's son Mushegh, who was studying at Petersburg University at that time, and daughter Ashkhen, with her husband lawyer G. Khatisyan, were always present at court sessions. The lawyers manage to deny the accusation, prove the writer's innocence, and as a result, the writer was declared innocent."
Toumanian had an impression – “The prosecutor (V. Sergeyev) was an amazing person and didn’t know what to do –he was so anxious, he understood what I did and my condition, and the injustice that happened with me.” A luxurious dinner was given at the famous "Danon" restaurant in Petersburg in honor of the writer, and famous Armenian and Russian intellectuals and public figures took part in it. After staying in Petersburg for some time, Toumanian leaved for Moscow, where he had meetings with the representatives of the Armenian society. They discussed the issues of celebrating two important anniversaries: the 1500th anniversary of Armenian writing invention and the 400th anniversary of printing. After some time he returns to Tiflis.
On August 4, 1912, the first Armenian national opera, “Anoush”, premiered in the city of Alexandropol. Before that, the composer Armen Tigranyan had already sent an invitation to Toumanian. He could not attend the performance, but sent a congratulatory message. “…I wish the love and efforts of Mr. Armenak and all of the participants to have success. My warm greetings to Anoush, Saro, Mosi, to the fairies of our mountains and all the participants. My love and respects to all…”.
In 1912 in October, when the Balkan national liberation war against Turkey begins (Greece, Bulgaria, Serbia, Montenegro participated), a new wave of struggle rises in the Caucasus against the atrocities unleashed by the Young Turks against Armenians, instilling hope in the Armenian people, especially the intelligentsia. In October-November of the same year, two congress-consultations are held in Tiflis. The goal was to take advantage of the favorable situation created as a result of the Balkan war and achieve the presentation of the Armenian Case in the international arena. On October 30, in defense of Western Armenians, Tiflis National Central Bureau (National Bureau) was established, which included Toumanian, Al. Khatisyan, N. Arakelyan, Al. Kalathar and others. Almost at the same time the Caucasian Society of Armenian writers was established choosing as chairman Toumanian. In fact, at the same time, he undertook two important national affairs: one was the fate of his people, the other is the salvation of Armenian culture. The poet devoted himself completely and selflessly to both.
The National Bureau adopted a resolution that was to be presented to Emperor Nicholas of Russia through Catholicos Gevorg V. The Bureau's activities of this period failed because it largely did not coincide with the policies pursued by Russia.
In 1912-1913 the writer continued to create. He wrote “Pigeon Monastery” ballad, “Sayat-Nova-Davit Bishop” study.
“The Brave Nazar” fairy tale was printed for the first time as a separate edition, “The Beauty Vasilisa” translated fairy tale was printed in “Hasker” magazine.
